Day Break

Sean has been bugging me about getting into Day Break for like the past week.  I finally relented after I heard that ABC cancelled the show since it meant I only had to watch a finite number of episodes.

The show is focused around Brett Hopper (played by the very tank Taye Diggs) who has been accused of killing some DA.  Hopper has been set up and he relives the same day until, as it seems, he solves the case.  The show is basically like Groundhog Day with Taye Diggs playing the Bill Murray role and, I guess, the murder case as Andie MacDowell.

The show is pretty good and the story is interesting, but I can’t handle how the writers won’t acknowledge the Groundhog-Day-like premise.  Every morning Taye Diggs wakes up and his alarm clock reads 6:17; how hard would it have been to have his clock radio play I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher.  Or when he has to explain to people how he’s reliving the same day, why can’t they start with, “Have you seen Groundhog Day?”  They should have an episode of him learning how to play the piano or flick cards into a hat.  Just have him do something, anything really, to acknowledge the movie.

In all seriousness, it’s a good show that takes some risks.  Shame to see it get cancelled while all those CSI (Case Solved In-an-hour) shows are still on the air.  There’s something to be said about the public and what they watch.  I dunno what it is, or who’s going to say it, but there is something…
